Very Zen: Honeymoon Day 3

We went to the Chinese Classical Gardens and after drinking tea and strolling along a perfectly beautiful garden, left feeling impossibly relaxed and chill.

To counteract this, we immediately headed to Voodoo Doughnut, a Portland staple wherein you can purchase doughnuts covered in Fruit Loops, or shaped like voodoo dolls (stabbed with a pretzel stick!)

There was also POWELL'S WORLD OF BOOKS, which is a 3-story bookstore quite literally larger than a city block, and Pittock Mansion which, despite being closed, offered us a beautiful view of Portland with Mt. Hood in the background.

Today's Breweries included Rogue (which was impossibly delicious), and Widmer (which was frankly disappointing).

Learning is Fun: Honeymoon Day 2

On day two we expanded our knowledge by going to OMSI (the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) which was fun and visiting the Zoo which was lovely but lemur-less. Of course we took that new knowledge of science and animals and drank it away at three more breweries.

Massage in a Bottle: 3 Days to Go

In honor of the last stretch before the big day Rob and I went for a couples massage tonight, courtesy of his parents. It was much needed. The lady who did my back commented about how my lower back was "all knotted up" and recommended I put some ice on it to reduce some of the inflammation. I am currently complying whilst getting a few things done.

At any rate, the massage has done wonders. It has given us new resolve to get everything done what needs to get done.

We're still assembling all the pieces for the reception, putting in the last minute details with the caterers and designer and DJ, finalizing the rehearsal dinner, cleaning the apartment for a small shindig we're having on Thursday, picking up packages, etc etc etc...

And if we don't get it done on time.. KABOOM! Wedding all over the place.

Pretty much everything is getting set in stone now. Time to print and assemble all the programs and table signs and escort cards, set up the guest book, flower girl basket, and so on and so on. Simple tasks but time consuming and last minute.

Oh and I got a call today... my tux is in. This just got real.

Dead Man Walking: 6 Days to Go

Yesterday was the day of my Bachelor Party, the celebration of the end of my wild ways. Yes it's all gray skies from here on out. Appropriate pictures can be found here.

Ten of my best boys and I started off at Sullivan's Irish Pub where they were having a pig roast (manly!) and improved beer selection in honor of Cleveland Beer Week. Upon arrival I was told to pick a beer so I chose a tasty (and high in alcohol) IPA without realizing they were serving the beer by the boot-full. Not that this dissuaded me from having a few more.

After that we moved on to The Beer Engine where, predictably there was more beer drinking (including a Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale which was amazing) and eating of fine fine health food, like whole burgers dipped in butter or burgers with grilled cheese sandwiches for buns.

There was much toasting, celebrating my impending loss of freedom and mourning Ohio State (though the less said about that the better). Many thanks to Vin for organizing the whole thing and Nathan, Dave, Peter, Tim, Justin, Jeff, Garrett, Nevin and Matt H for attending. Oh and Matt G and Aimee for crashing and presenting me with a wine cork with some strange T&A. It was a fun and suitable adieu to my bachelorhood.

The days leading up to the wedding are filled with primping and pampering the likes of which I have never experienced. I am not, as I'm sure it is clear, in any way girly. But a wedding is a special time, so I had a hair appointment today to get my first professional highlight ever. Tuesday is my brow appointment, which I'm dreading. There's a massage Wednesday and a hair trial / nail appointment Friday. A girl's work is never done!!!

A Match Made in Bacon: 9 Days to Go

My fantastic work associates, boss and staff threw me a "man shower" today at Great Lakes Brewery, complete with bacon roses and gifts of tools and grilling stuff.

After a year and a half it still feels weird that people are gathering to celebrate us. As someone who has always been content to blend into the background, it never ceases to amaze me how many people have gone out of their way for us through this whole process. I'm not sure I could really fully express my gratitude.

Real bow ties... no one uses them any more, no one sells them. It's sad. Not that I plan on actually using one in terms of tying and wearing it, but just to drape around my neck half way through the night as if I'd slickly undone the tie I was wearing earlier.

Erica and I had been fearing the process of assigning the seating chart for some time now. We even blogged about it a while back, joking that it would require 500 attempts. So we've been putting it off, or at least gave it a spot on our "to do list" that was as late as possible.

Turns out all that fear was unfounded. While working on some early seat assignment prep we kinda accidentally slid right into it and within no time at all we had all the tables pieced together. I'd say it was one of the easier things we've done in this entire wedding planning process.

We're hoping the good luck sticks with us.

Had a wonderful time today at the pumpkin festival with Vin, Jodie, Charlotte and our little flower girl, Lucy. We practiced her leaf-sprinkling routine, which went very well. She's such a sweetie!

I had my second dress fitting today, and it went pretty well. The dress fits me beautifully, and there's just a few adjustments to go. Best of all, I learned two things today.

We went and got our marriage license today. When the woman at the counter told us to sign the form and raise our right hand, we both thought she was joking. She clarified "seriously, raise your right hand." We had to comply and swear that the information we provided was true and that we loooove each other (actually they don't care so much about that last part, just that you have an ID and know your mother's maiden name, for the sanctity of it all). Like so many of these experiences lately we had to stop and remind ourselves that for the rest of our lives, we will never again do what we did today.

After the shower, a few of my closest buddies and I went out to have a girly good time. It was exactly the sort of Bachlorette party I wanted... fun, intimate, laid-back, and just a tad silly. Yes, there are pictures of that event, and many of them are terribly embarrassing.

First, we started at Steak on a Stone. I had never been, and was admittedly curious about cooking my own meat at the table. Not only was it a good time, but the food was mouth-watering. We had a no-frills steak, cooked just about as freshly and juicy as you could want, and everyone got to choose two dipping sauces. Naturally we ended up sharing so we each go to try something like 8 sauces each.

Having gotten sufficiently meated, we moved on to the exercise portion of the night. Doing our best impression of a gaggle of teenagers, we headed to the rollerskating rink. There, no one managed to break a leg, though several of us managed to fall down. We skated till we could skate no more, which admittedly was varying times for all of us.

Then it was on to the "drinkin'" part of our evening. We started at the Lakewood Winking Lizard, where I managed to fight my instincts to drink beer and stuck with girly pink mixed drinks. After having a couple there, we ended the night at Corky's where we had a terrific time despite the presence of the is-almost-never there terrible karaoke guy.

After all of this, a few of us (by which I mean me, my MOH Shanda, and my mom) were ready for more. More food, that is. We hit Denny's. Hard. Then we hit the bed. Harder.

Thank you to Shanda, Jen, Becky, and Alicia for coming out with me, and for being such good sports. Thank you especially to my mother for her generosity, and for keeping an eye on all of us and getting us from point A to B, back to A, to point C, then to point D and E then to F and back to C. You are far better than any limo, because I would much rather have the memory of having you there.

We had our florist meeting today... finally. It could not have gone better. Michael mentioned things we wanted (and had written down) before we even brought them up, had great ideas for things we didn't know how to handle, and brought the whole shebang in at budget. Our wedding is shaping up to be beautiful, and this has left us with a satisfied and accomplished feeling that we really needed to give us a good boost as we go down the final stretch.

A couple months ago we set up a table in the corner of our apartment and dubbed it "Wedding Central." After about a week, Wedding Central filled up so up went a second table, dubbed "Wedding Central Annex." For months, both areas were filled with projects, gifts, files, books, signs, etc.

Today, enough progress has been made that Wedding Central Annex was no longer needed and has been taken down. Insignificant as it may seem, this is in fact the first act of wedding de-escalation we have performed. It's actually a bit sad.

We're back to the wedding grind again. We had finally checked everything off of our list, and now it's full again. And although there's a lot of annoying "write this really big check to vendor A" and "contact vendor B and ask them why they haven't gotten back to us yet" in there... there's also a lot of "finalize the ceremony" and "decide which song we want to cut the cake to"... and that feels nice.

After a big event that requires a lot of prep, like a shower, it's easy to want to take a break, a week or so off from thinking about every little detail. Such breaks are simply not possible. It's been a night of packing, checking, and double checking. We're on our way to New York tomorrow to visit my very awesome grandmother - who is graciously throwing for us a rockin' Bridal Shower. My New York family will be in attendance - as will my east coast bridesmaids. I'm so excited about seeing everyone I could just about explode. Also there's a pool. What more could you ask for?

What was supposed to be a five minute stop into our Tuxedo Rental place to drop of a groomsman's out of town measurements turned into an hour long debacle.

I don't blame the people working there as much as the man trying on a tux, being difficult, not allowing them to help any of the other customers in the store. I understand that people are particular (heck, we are) but why do you need to have a ten minute whiny conversation about the shoes? They're shoes! They're black. They have laces. You put them on and they protect your feet from the elements. And when that was done he started on the suspenders.

Our apartment is filling up quickly with wedding schtuff. There's scraps of paper, drafts of table signs, returned RSVPs, the last few invites and probably a badger in there, too. The point is, planning a wedding is messy work. I can't wait until it's all over and we can go back to Rob's socks everywhere instead.

Our website has a fancy super-involved feature that allows us to draw up an exact schematic replica of our reception space, make little tables and figure out the seating arrangement. Unfortunately all the complexities were too difficult.

So we moved on to creating an Excel spreadsheet to manage our seating arrangement. But that was also not working.

So we pulled out a notebook and started writing things down in pencil, yet weren't able to visualize it.

And finally we found a successful method. Little pieces of paper with people's names on them, spread out across the floor. Who needs technology?

Is it what every modern couple does or is it a sign of far too much micromanaging that we're basically writing our entire wedding ceremony?

Not that we're writing writing it from scratch. We've got some books from the library with a lot of samples that are a great help. Basically we're picking our favorite bits, trying to leave out anything that goes on and on about how much misery we'll face together (bummer man), or items about how marriage is the most important thing ever (harsh on the single people in attendance) or suggestions that our marriage is all part of God's special plan (he should focus less on us and work more on making the Browns better... seriously, we'll be fine).

Hopefully when it's all done it'll be yet another accomplishment, micromanaged to success.

I've been working out in preparation for the wedding in the only way I know how: swimming. I was a competitive swimmer from ages 8-19, and I find it to be the absolutely most effective and enjoyable way to get in shape.

The rest of the world, it seems, does not agree.

Maybe it's just the times I go, but it seems the only people who swim to work out are over the age of 60 or are doing some sort of physical therapy. Is swimming really that déclassé? Am I so out of touch?

How thankful are we to our parents, Vin & Jodie, Jen & Nathan and Peter & Olivia for coming over today to help us assemble wedding invitations? The task was daunting and would have taken just the two of us days. With everyone together it took us about four hours.

Everyone gave their time and effort to cut and paste and assemble and all for us. We feel very loved and could not be more appreciative of them.

"Proper etiquette for wedding invitation envelopes is to hand write them," is what someone on some website somewhere wrote quickly and conveniently using their computer.

Tomorrow we'll be having people over to assist us in writing outer envelopes, inner envelopes, pasting, stamping, and otherwise assembling all of our invitations. What we're doing tonight is really only very tenuously related to the big party that is our Wedding. We're preparing for the preparing of the inviting of people to the big party.

Okay, handwriting... don't fail me now!

Instead of going to bed early tonight like we promised ourselves we would, we stayed up late obsessing over our penmanship. Those wedding invitations aren't going to address themselves (that would have been an extra buck per envelope), so we better just suck it up and get to it... tomorrow.

Oh, and the verdict is in! We weighed an invite at the USPS and officially know we won't have to sell blood just to buy stamps. A bit of advice to anyone getting married in the future, though, postcards are awesome.

The invitations have arrived! The invitations have arrived! We were very excited to come home to a delivery today. Our invitations have arrived and we do love them. But with all things in this process, that means more work must commence. Invite assembly, envelope stamping, stuffing and fancy penmanship skills must now be applied. More hard work to follow.

As promised we pulled the trigger on our honeymoon plans today. Sleeping on it didn't really give us any added perspective (not that we needed any, we were pretty happy with things yesterday) but it did put us one day closer to the deadline so it had to be done.

Perhaps I should be more actively excited that we're definitely going on a honeymoon and the plans are finally made. I'll get there as soon as I get over the horrible dread that we did something wrong and there's no going back.

Some days you have a hundred things to do and you fly through them with success and tenacity. Some days you have only a couple things to do but you want to do more. Some days there's nothing you can do even though there's still a lot to get done.

And those days might be the most stressful because you realize just how little control you have over many of the elements that go into the day that will ultimately have your name on it. You look for some meaningful lesson in all the frustration but it's late and there's no real resolution so you hop into a comfortable bed with your fiance and think "well... life could be worse."

We've been struggling with the question of whether or not to get a limo for awhile now. It seems like such a fun idea, and it looks nice in pictures... but...

It's not like we have to get from a ceremony location to a reception. The only place we would need to get a ride to would be the photographs... and I don't relish the possibility of paying a driver to wait around for a couple hours. Besides, I'm sure we could spend the $400 or so in a much better way.

Got my wedding purse today, my veil and headpiece yesterday, and the jewelry is waiting to be picked up at the UPS. The accessories should now be all together. Super!

I also managed to entirely forget to do the one wedding thing I slated for myself today - calling the salon to finally book my hair and makeup appointment. Boh.

The Big Countdown Begins: 99 Days to go

What do you do with less than 100 days until your wedding? Something every day, that's for sure. For the next three months we will be eating, sleeping and breathing wedding. So we thought we'd update the blog a bit every day from now until then for two reasons. First, it might be entertaining for people to find out all the crazy things to be done. And secondly, it'll be helpful for the detectives to put together the pieces when they find we've spontaneously combusted leaving behind only a bit of charred tulle.

So on day 99 we finalized the menu (mmmm tasty tasty fall foods, hope y'all like squash), nearly finalized the schedule, got the ball rolling on decorations, clarified the logistics, continued to cement the inclement weather backup plan and ate cake. The cake wasn't because of the wedding, but instead due to a friend's recent birthday. However anything that puts you into a stress-relieving sugar coma quickly becomes an integral part of the wedding planning process.

The Best and Worst of the Internet

I cannot imagine planning a wedding without the wonderful series of tubes that is the internet. It has been an indispensable tool for finding vendors, estimating costs, and purchasing various bits on the cheap. However, it hasn't all been icanhascheezeburger and woot... there's been a good amount of hosanna1 in there as well. It's a minefield out there, and no one gives you a map! In that spirit, I present to you the best and worst of the wedding internet.

WEDDING PLANNING WEBSITES
Best - weddingwire.com. Budget tool? Check. To Do list? Check? Seating Map? Check. iPhone App? Check. Good stuff here. The build-your-own wedding website offered here even coordinates with our invites... as in, they were made to match each other. Nice. Honorable mention goes to theknot.com, which fell short of many of the categories listed above... but is filled with great ideas and articles.

Worst - weddingabc.net. Here, you can "make you own wedding place card". Also, don't miss this poorly written guide to wedding photographs, complete with the gem: "Another thing that you would need properly done would be the make-up of the bride and the bridesmaids. As a matter of fact, even grooms today wear a bit of make-up so that would look great in the photographs."

PHOTOGRAPHER WEBSITES
Best - www.genevievenisly.com. Has lots of beautiful examples of photos that stand on their own as works of art, and best of all... no annoying soundtrack. It can be done! Too bad she is waaaaay out of our price range.

Worst - (not safe for work) livingstonephotography.com. Wins mostly for the "boudoir" section. I understand the idea behind wedding boudoir photos... as a loving gift to your groom-to-be. However, they have to be done in a very classy manner and these, well, are not. Watch the slideshow for a good laugh! Some of my favorite moments: a bouquet covering the lady business, really bad tan lines, and (I am not kidding) an engagement ring around a nipple.

DISC JOCKEY WEBSITES
Best - selectivesound.com. Proves you can have a nice website without music or videos all over the place. Love the searchable song list! Yes, Laura, they have Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart!

Worst - arizonadjmusic.com. This lady can be your DJ, your band, your officiant, hell... she'll even marry the groom herself if that's what it takes to be your DJ/Band/Officiant. You can even listen to her sing a duet of "I got you, Babe" with herself, you know... just in case you were worried your wedding day would be about you and not her.

HEADPIECE WEBSITES
Best - wedding-veil.com. To be fair, I haven't received my shipment yet, so I can't speak to their customer service, but I must say I was very impressed by the variety, customization, and especially the prices of this website.

Worst - mariaelenaheadpieces.com. I'm not sure what's worse, the looping soundtrack or the complete lack of information. Maybe it's the ethereal way the ladies are photographed, making it impossible to see any detail in the items. Maybe it's the fact that their items seem to only be worn by redheads.

ACCESSORY WEBSITES
Best - zappos.com. I cannot say enough good things about zappos. Shoes are easy to find, and shipping is free and speedy. Best of all, if you need to return shoes (like the beautiful yet painful ones), it's also free shipping.

Worst - catanfashions.com. I really disliked these guys. They were rude, unhelpful, and seemed to not have time for me once they realized I wasn't going to spend $5000 on a dress. So, tell me, if you want to be such a high-class place, Catans, why the ugly and not helpful website? Why?
